Jonathan Baumbach’s “Book Notes”

Jonathan has contributed an exquisite “Book Notes” playlist essay for YOU or The Invention of Memory to Largehearted Boy. The editor, David Gutowski, whose taste I admire in many realms, said, “You tackles the vagaries of memory and love in a tangled genius of a novel that few other contemporary authors could even attempt to write.” Ooh, goosebumps! A song I’ve discovered as a result of Jonathan’s soundtrack to the book appears above, K.D. Lang covering Neil Young’s “Helpless.”

I am listening to it and sort of moping around at the moment because I wanted to do an event for YOU in Brooklyn where Jonathan has so many fans but the bookstore of my dreams said no. Don’t let Samantha from Sex and the City fool you: publicity is hard work, especially when you specialize in the quixotic variety. I think I am going to listen to “Helpless” two more times and then bottom out on the pity party by calling it a day and going out for a milkshake. More later, as always.
